Guided Nature Walks

Join our two California Climate Action Corps fellows, Katherine and Nann, for guided nature walks during Open House: Community Day on Sundays at the Back Bay Science Center.

Sign up for Nann’s walk, Biodiversity at the Back Bay, to learn about the interconnection of diverse species and ecosystems in the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve. Join Katherine for her walk, Blue Carbon: Nature’s Climate Solution, to learn about a natural climate solution hiding in our very own waters.

Be sure to carve out time before or after your scheduled walk to check out the rest of our Open House — like our touch tanks and native plant nursery — run by one of our partners, Newport Bay Conservancy.

Guided walks take place at either 11:00am or 12:00pm on select Sundays at the Back Bay Science Center. Each walk covers about a quarter (0.25) mile of distance on trails around the Back Bay Science Center and lasts approximately one hour. The minimum recommended age is 12 years old. Registration and completed waivers are required. Inclement weather may cancel our guided walks as they are outdoors. Both our guided nature walks and the Open House are free and open to the public.

Come ready to learn about the history of the Upper Newport Bay, the carbon cycle and carbon’s role in life on Earth, what a blue carbon ecosystem is and where they are found in the Bay, and how blue carbon and balanced ecosystems are crucial solutions to our warming climate. Register here.

Biodiversity at the Back Bay

Come join us to learn about biodiversity at Upper Newport Bay! We’ll explore what biodiversity means — why having a wide range of plants, animals, and microorganisms is essential for a healthy and thriving planet. We’ll also discover how all species, like pollinators, are interconnected and how they create the balance of life that supports us every day.  Lastly, we’ll talk about how climate change is affecting biodiversity and ecosystems right here at the Bay. You’ll hear about the changes we’re seeing in habitats, what this means for the future, and what we can do to make a positive impact. Register here.
