Aquatic Restoration

Willet

Eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds are important for sediment deposition, substrate for algae and macro-invertebrates, and as a nursery for many economically important fish and shellfish.  It is the only submerged marine flowering plant and was once used by Indigenous Peoples for food, basket weaving, and roofing.

Please Note

Because the Back Bay Science Center is located on an Ecological Reserve and State Marine Conservation Area, the gated facility is only open to the public for scheduled events and activities.
