Estuary

Salt Marsh Bird's Beak

Estuaries are among the most productive and important aquatic ecosystems due to being critical natural habitats that can function, among other things, as fish nurseries and migration stops for birds.  In an estuary, you can see a mix of wildlife from the ocean, the watershed, and the terrestrial habitat.  Many organisms in estuaries are either primarily saltwater dwelling or primarily freshwater dwelling but capable of tolerating both.

Please Note

Because the Back Bay Science Center is located on an Ecological Reserve and State Marine Conservation Area, the gated facility is only open to the public for scheduled events and activities.
