Osprey Tower

Osprey

Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) are unusual among hawks in possessing a reversible outer toe that allows them to grasp with three toes in front and one behind.  Barbed pads on the soles of the bird's feet help them grip slippery fish which comprises most of their diet.  When flying with prey, an Osprey lines up its catch headfirst for less wind resistance.  They weigh only three pounds but have a wingspan of five to six feet.

Please Note

Because the Back Bay Science Center is located on an Ecological Reserve and State Marine Conservation Area, the gated facility is only open to the public for scheduled events and activities.
