Plant Adaptations

Saltwort

Pickleweed (Salicornia virginia) and Goosefoot (Subfamily: Chenopodioideae) loves saltwater (halophytic) and lives full-time in the salt marsh or along the saline soils.  It collects all the salt from the water and draws it up to its tip, then drops the red colored tip or flower when full.  Cordgrass (Spartina foliosa) also a halophyte, is nesting material used by Ridgeways Rails (Rallus obsoletus) an endangered bird found in the bay.

Please Note

Because the Back Bay Science Center is located on an Ecological Reserve and State Marine Conservation Area, the gated facility is only open to the public for scheduled events and activities.
