Saving the Bay

Dodder

Did you know when Jay Robinson rode home on his bike in 1963 and told his mother that the bay was now closed to the public, it started a grassroots movement by Fran and Frank Robinson?  This brought public outcry and led to the Upper Newport Settlement Agreement in 1975.  Then in 1985, due to tremendous community opposition, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted to reject building a four-lane extension of University Drive that would have cut through the northern end of Back Bay.  The Robinson Family and friends are the reason Upper Newport Bay exists today.

Please Note

Because the Back Bay Science Center is located on an Ecological Reserve and State Marine Conservation Area, the gated facility is only open to the public for scheduled events and activities.
